ARTIST STATEMENT

THERE IS A NEW VERVE, EXCITEMENT AND DYNAMISM TO MY PURPOSE AS AN ARTIST. THE ROAD HAS BEEN LONG AND FRUITFUL, THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES OF GESTATION AND TIMES OF ACTION. PRESENTLY WORKING WITH PLASTER, I FEEL ON THE CUSP OF A BREAKTHROUGH, A NEW ERA TO MY WORK.

IT IS AMAZING HOW LIFE IS MORE CHALLENGING, EXCITING AND VITAL THAN EVER BEFORE!

MAGIC, FROM THE ANCIENTS TO THE PRESENT, IS EMBODIED IN MY SCULPTURES AND DRAWINGS. I INVITE YOU TO BE PART OF THIS MANIFESTATION, TO REACT, TO THINK, AND POSE MORE SEARCHING QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR LIFE AND YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO OUR DEEP AND ANCIENT PAST. THERE IS A SEARCH THROUGH THESE ANCIENT CONNECTIONS TO FIND OUR NEW POSSIBLE BEINGS AND BE-COMINGS.

THERE IS A NEED TO BRING FORWARD COLLECTIVE DREAMS, OF OUR SHARED MAGIC, AND TO SHOW THE JOY OF OUR EXISTENCE ON EARTH. WORKING WITH THE IMMEDIACY OF PLASTER, IT IS POSSIBLE TO CATCH THOSE TRACES OF OTHER WORLDLINESS AND PLAY, SOMETHING THAT BRINGS VALUE TO MAGIC AND DREAMING.

WORKING WITH PLASTER ALLOWS AN INSTANT BREATH OF LIFE INTO THESE BEINGS I SCULPT. I USE MY HANDS TO SHAPE AND FORM THE TRACES OF AN HYPNOTIC YESTERYEAR, A RAW PRESENT AND MAGICAL FUTURE!

CURRENT PROJECT ; A Kickass show of Awe-inspiring Women

Picture Frida Khalo, in the body of a tortured dear, emerging from the wall pierced by arrows. Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the form of Wonder Woman, diminutive, with one foot thrust powerfully out from the wall. Hand on hip with gavel, defiantly facing the world and the court to champion womens rights. Boudica, ancient Celtic warrior queen, rising from the floor, defiantly opposing the Roman invasion, red hair streaming.

This new body of work will include new political voices like Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Letitia James, Mazie Hirono and Kamala Harris, as the stars on a field of blue in the context of the American flag.

Scale, texture, color and something formless and intriguing will be presented in plaster and mixed media. There will ultimately be 12-15 pieces in the installation in order to make the experience all encompassing. The space will eventually dictate which pieces are represented.

The paper sculpture by Mindy Alper and Will Kurtz use a raw humanist approach with their materials, using scale and everyday materials to tell their stories in emotionally direct ways. Plaster gauze has the ability to achieve this raw, direct visceral response if it is used maintaining a rough texture, helping to achieve the immediacy that the paper work does, and avoiding the temptation to overwork the surface.
